How do we uplift new voices in Hollywood? With strategy and radical collaboration. In early 2020 we launched The Disruptors Fellowship with 5050by2020 to support emerging television writers who identify as trans, non-binary, disabled and/or currently or formerly undocumented. Our goal is to empower storytellers who have been sidelined by the industry to normalize narratives that have historically been underrepresented on television. The paid fellowship will support emerging screenwriters through five months of master classes, community-building, coaching and insights from industry professionals affiliated with productions like Jane the Virgin, NCIS: New Orleans, Transparent, and Rush Hour. With 91% of TV show creators being white and 78% being men, it's crucial to empower and provide the right tools to storytellers who speak to different perspectives. One of the best ways to diversify voices in Hollywood is to offer opportunities for these writers to be in the writers’ room.
